FAQ & LORE UPDATE

Help us help you!

So, it's come to our attention as staff that there is some confusion regarding pieces of our lore, or just questions in general about how the site and how demons and human interact.

To fix this, we're compiling a list of hang-ups, questions and ponderings from you! Because you play here and we respect and cherish your thoughts and ideas. We want to make playing at Demon Realm easy and fun, without limiting your (or our) creativity.

So, list your questions here! Any and all of them. (Also, if you feel the need, you may also state why it is confusing. Especially if it is from Frommer's Guidebook - we are aiming to make it easier to understand - so helping us better state that is appreciated!) Even if these questions have already been answered, please ask them again!

It's important, and also will help us compile a FAQ to help break down the harder to explain aspects of the lore.

Thanks!

How easy is it to travel back and forth? Like, say someone is from London and they find a doorway that leads to a place in the City. Is that doorway always available? Or once they leave the City, would they have to find a new way in?

The City acts as a City-State kind of governance,
"That said, the City acts as its own political entity, policing and governing itself while proclaiming diplomatic neutrality. For all intents and purposes, the City is its own country, and a prominent one at that." Cited facts Hollaaaaaaa
So there is a government buuuuuut There is the bit in the coppers section of the guidebook that does name them as mercenaries...
So it's a little of column a and a little of column B
Which meaaaaans another thing we should make clearer in the guidebook

How exactly do the floors govern themselves if at all? What is there relationship to the Legion/Spirit Detectives? How about other Embassies?

Et:

Epsilon - Today at 10:38 PM
Probably clarify the SD and the rules about joining them or the robbers too
Since the Legion is described as being militaristic and.... Lol.

“DOES THE CITY HAVE A SKY, OR CAN YOU SEE THE BOTTOM OF THE FLOOR ABOVE YOU, LIKE A DOME?”
Only the Panopticon has a dome instead of the sky. The hitches that you can ride between floors rise and fall, however, and if you fly far enough up you'll find yourself on a new floor.

Clarification of this, FAQ entry about how one gets between the floors.

You know, I went to link our brand new: Immigration Booklet here as an additional answer to the asks and fucking - I swear to Christ I thought I answered all of these. I'm so sorry bros.

The Great Answering of August

Forge

Subject 1: The City and it's Floors

Question 1. What currency is used within the City?
AFMD - Essentially A Fata Morgana Dollars. Specifics haven't really been determined because it's not terribly necessary for plot purposes. Coins, dollars, probably pretty pictures. Dollars is the most common way to address them.

Question 2. What exactly do the hitches to get between floors look like?
Like really large elevators; big enough to hold cars for mass transport. It's operation is probably pretty expensive, all things considering. But think of it like a ferry, just up and down.

Question 3. If you build something will it stay permanent, or do you just move onto existing buildings?
It'll be permanent.

Question 4. Do phone calls work between floors?
Yes.

Question 5. How frequently can the floors change in any conceivable way?
Infrequent enough to cause traffic problems, frequent enough to give Google Maps a run for their money.

Question 6. Is it possible to control any aspects of the floor changing?
Nah, not really. Unless you have like, Godly Earth or something.

Question 7. Aside from the hitches, what other methods of transportation are common in the City?
Subway, Tunnels, ect...

Subject 2: Domains and Ascensions

Question 8. How much of an impact does an augmentation have on a domain it augments?
No more than half a proficiency step.

Question 9. Does the tier of the ascension affect how much it augments a domain?
Not really? But there are other aspects of an ascension that augment the ascended.

Question 10. Can you stack an ascension augment with someone using the augmentation domain?
Such as both of these ascensions affect air? Probably, by all logical senses, but probably not enough to double or triple the effect.

Question 11. Will we ever get a rundown of the domains and what each mastery of the domains will allow you to do with them?
No, we like allowing users to use their own interpretations. If you give a cat a box they'll stay in the box.

Question 12. If the easiest way to gain domains is to cannibalise another demon, do you get to select a single domain they possess or do you get all of them?
One domain, randomly rolled for lesser mastery.

Question 13. If you have eight domains and you cannibalise a demon with six, do you get to select which you lose?
Nope.

Question 14. Is it possible to eventually have such mastery over two similar domains that you can create a hybrid domain?
Yeah, probably. Depends on how you use them.

Subject 3: Humans and their Demons

Question 15. Can demons only use the senses of the host or do they have their own?
They have their own.

Question 16. What happens to the demon if the human is asleep or in a coma?
Sucks to be them. Hope they have hobbies. In the case of a coma? Hopefully that human has a benign demon or they may end up murdered in their slumber...

Question 17. To what extent can a demon influence or control their human?
Whatever extent the human allows.

Question 18. How much can a demon influence or interact with the world around them from within their host?
Whatever they chose, essentially. It depends on what form they take. If they are incorporeal, they follow such logic. If they are material they can do whatever that corporeal form can do.

Question 19. If the human can affect the appearance of a demon through their affinity to a person or creature, is it possible to control this and change the appearance of your demon?
In theory, yes.

Amondrask

Subject 1: The City and it's Floors

Question 1. What happens when you get to the end of a floor, horizontally speaking, is there a wall?
Think of it like a Civilization map. It just restarts and sticks you on the other side again. East, literally becomes West.

Question 2.Is there much open countryside in the Floors? Long roads, secluded areas? Particularly with the more urban Floors, what's outside the townships?
Yes. Floors tend to be whatever it is they contain, but open space, particularly in more scenic areas and suburban areas are common. The more urban floors tend to remain so.

Question 3. Large bodies of water, or Floors composed entirely of sea? Completely alien landscapes?
Tonton Macoute is a fairly large body of water. In theory, yes there are all of these - though perhaps not highly populated with humans or have City government extend to them for that reason. There is an infinite amount of floors.

Question 4. Floors inherently inhospitable to human life?
Probably. But not often visited or remembered for obvious reasons.

Question 5. Can two or more Floors merge, or can a Floor separate into two distinct Floors?
In theory yes, though it probably won't ever happen in game.

Question 6. How many Floors have been discovered? Who names them?
Whoever decides to name them, essentially. Whether it be colonial or a group of dudes like "This is now Sealand, we are a country." There are innumerable floors.

Question 7. Are any Floors secret or forbidden?
Probably, but they wouldn't be known for obvious reasons.

Question 8.Are there any Floors without significant presence from the major Factions?
Yes.

Question 9.Do buildings, places or landmarks ever change Floors?
Nah, it's pretty static in that respect. Small changes, not big ones.

Question 10.Can you procure natural resources from a Floor? Stone, metal, oil, etc. Do they regenerate?
Yes, and proooobably? However, the City's economy is based primarily around import/export, not resources.

Question 11.Any resources, plants, etc, unique to the City?
Yes, but not any worth noting.

Question 12.Any covert ways to switch floors, without detection?
Yes.

Subject 2: Humans and their Demons

Question 13. Can a demon turn a particular portion of their body corporeal, such as their hand, while the rest is incoporeal?
Depends on their abilities, yes.

Question 14. Do demons need to breathe?
Depending on their form, yes or no.

Question 15. Can a human eat a demon? Would it be nourishing at all?
Perhaps a corporeal one? But I doubt it would sit well with them in any way shape or form.

Question 16. How strong, physically, is a demon? Would a human be able to match one, barring dominions?
Depends on their form.

Question 17. Can demons be harmed in any lasting fashion? They can shift and change their form, so would a severed limb be permanent?
Depends on their form, yes. If their chosen manifestation is irreparably harmed (such as beheading a humanoid demon) yeah, they'll die, but you cannot suffocate a skeleton or ghost.

Question 18. What do we know of demon society? Is there a heirarchy? Do they know each other, outside of human partner-induced contact?
Sure, if they've met before. And demons can sense each other. However, as far as deeper demon societies, it is assumed though not proven that demons did not originally function like human society. Details have not been acquired, whether that be from tight-lipped demons or that they simply do not see the point in divulging such information.

Question 19. Can humans go to the demon realm itself?
The City is the Demon Realm.

Subject 3: Bonus Round

Question 20. Are there any entities or creatures native to the City? Animals, monsters, people?
Yes, but not anything of note.

Question 21. What bodies govern the City? Are there different systems of rule per Floor?
See our handy dandy new Immigration Document that has that information in it.

Question 22. How do factions such as the Legion go about getting a contract with the City?
Probably the same as any other job. Applying or being requested. Same with Detectives.

Question 23. Has the City proved to be a sentient/aware entity in and of itself? Has it ever sent emmisaries?
Nope.

Question 24. Does the internet, TV, phone service and so on extend to the outside world? Could someone email or call someone in America from the City?
Yes.

Question 26. Who runs/staffs the Panopticon?
Legionnaires/Government Affairs

Question 28. Are there any particularly notorious or scary inmates? Is there a super hardcore solitary section for the real bad ones?
Yes.

Question 29. How hard is it to get anti-dominion materials/gear/etc? Is it expensive?
Hard as balls and expensive as shit.

Question 30. Does the anti-dominion gear only have to be used on the human, or does it work separately on the demon?
Simultaneously on host and demon.

Question 31. Is there anything stopping organizations moving in en masse? Be it personnel, goods, an army, what have you. Like could America just up and decide to move in on the City?
I mean they could? Technically? But it'd be like all of America's citizens being like "I'm going to actually be Canadian" and all of them simultaneously moving to Canada.

Question 32. How do people know what Ascension they have/choices they have, if they know at all?
They can ask the Fortune Teller what their paths may be. They would probably know their Ascensions as they would understand their dominions. New ones may be a bit of a surprise, just as dominions may have once been.

Question 33. Have any NPCs/historical people ever gotten Ascension forms?
Yes.

Question 34.Is there a limit to how much you can use dominions? Does it take energy or tire you?
It does take energy, and will tire a person, especially if they are completing a task that stretches the possibilities of their mastery. The higher the mastery the longer/more you can do before getting tired.
