Organic chemistry was the bane of her existence in every sense of the word—no, it was the bane of every student ambitious and masochistic enough to go into the field of medicine. She'd come to theorize that it was created for the sole purpose of hazing prospective younger generations who wanted either to give back, pursue an interest (of which many would later regret), or more than likely seek financial security. How else was society to pick the cream of the crop if everyone qualified? Yet still, she hated it nonetheless. Not that she was to blame, with five to seven hours a day, six days a week, and nearly a whole month spent in the library, her sanity was surely but slowly spiraling into a series of reactions between organic carbon compounds and materials. She spoke, thought, and dreamt in studies of structures and properties.

Her only reprieve came in the form of a certain Raleigh Pace, he who was a lighthouse in the midst of a stormy sea.

"Ugh, I can't do it," she groaned inelegantly, her head dropping down onto the pages of her textbook with a firm 'thunk', "I'm starting to see the world in hexagons." As if to test the accuracy of her statement, Lily turned her head to the side to peer at her more studious counterpart. For a while that was all that she did because that was how the law of attraction worked and she was weak to its gravitational pull. Perching her head on the palm of her hand, she imagined running her fingers along his profile but settled instead for reaching forward so to brush them along his sideburn, tucking invisible strands behind his ear with a barely there touch. Wordlessly, her hand continued to trail its cool path along his jawline before she palmed the side of his face hidden from her view. With a gentle but impulsive tug, Lily quietly appealed for his undivided attention.

"Yep, even your face is a hexagon," she whispered conspiratorially, her eyes glinting playfully. She knew she should have been studying but as of this moment, her brain was checked out and with ample distraction by her side, it seemed a waste not to revel in the few and far between friendships that mattered to her.

Friendship, if they could call it that.

Because friends touched each other so comfortably.

Because Raleigh was a "friend"; emphasis, in italics with air quotes.

Though Raleigh didn't consider himself supremely intelligent, or even on the same par as some of his classmates, he had a driven stubbornness to wade through the swamp and muck of college level courses and weather the storm of procedures, disorders, and (as per right now) organic chemistry. Though, thankfully, he had a partner to wade through the deep muck, even if she tended to get a little distracted at times. She still had determination regardless, in the moments when it really mattered, and he admired that about her.

Among other things.

He smirked when her face fell into the book, burnt out from her geometrical nightmare. They'd been at it for quite some time sitting together at the table for nearly four hours straight trying to cram as much information as possible before their looming exam in the distance. Raleigh was hard at work, of course, studiously taking notes of everything he remembered being important — and some things that might not have been, but he wasn't sure in the end. However, his smirk grew into a stronger smile, feeling her hand trace away at his face while he continued reading, getting barely to the end of the page before his vision was turned over to her, grinning away off to his side. Her grin was returned by his own calmer smile, his body leaning over and his hand reaching over to grab the back of her chair for stability.

Too bad my face isn't going to be on our test in two days, he joked under his breath, face pressed right up to hers. I'm sure you'd ace the whole class right then and there. Slowly, he closed what little distance there was between them, a fully distracting kiss intending to pull them away from their studies.

And he picked the library because he figured they would be less likely to get side-tracked.

Her eyes followed the minute changes along his lips, memorizing the way the whorls of his smiles tugged and curled with her every touch. She liked the calm that he was when he kept reading despite her first graze, but more than that, she liked what she did to him when he allowed it with a softness to his gaze and kindness written into the lines of his grin.

When he acquiesced her desires and leaned his weight forward unto his arm, encasing her in the space between chair and table, Lily felt safe. Protected, even. The semblance of security he offered was an oasis to the girl who knew only violence in its most sinister, nuanced ways. It wore the skin of parenthood and responsibility, promised her safe harbor from tumultuous seas. She never knew a greater lie or of deeper wounds than that which came of innocence lost. But sullied as she was, he was here and when his warmth plumed against her face, her eyes shuddered close to revel in the affections that she pined for. "If only," she managed before his lips bore down upon her own. She wondered then if he knew the sweetness of his breath; that somehow someone could be both gentle and insistent all the same. Did he know that her heart thundered in her chest when he so much as looked her way? Or that she thought she would suffocate from the tenderness of his touch.

Sometimes she was certain she would cry from knowing that maybe, just maybe, she was also deserving of something more.

Instead Lily cradled his cheeks between her hands, deepening the kiss with little care to exactly where they were because she was teeming with too much for this one person who saw past the scars he did not know to look for. She would have continued but like the responsible students that they were, they'd chosen to study in the library where fellow peers were now witness to a private exchange that should have been kept behind closed doors. A girl cleared her throat from four tables over, her brows furrowed in equal parts embarrassment and frustration, 'umm, do you guys mind?' Lily smiled and threw a quick apologetic wave her way before planting one last, firm kiss on Leigh's lips—much to the girl's dismay. "The library was a good choice," she quipped teasingly, "especially if you were planning on kissing me like that." At that she pulled away though her gaze never quite left his.

If Raleigh was a safe haven of protection to Lily, she was the sun that shined back down on him, a beam of positive energy that encouraged him to leave the confines of his personal space and branch out of his shell. She enticed him to go out of his comfort zone and explore, not for the benefit of others, but for himself. His childhood years were dark ones, with welts borne of anger and a feeling that even those that promised to protect the weak can turn on their charges. He felt exposed at home, unable to roam the halls without being caught in the watchful gaze of rage personified.

But Lily's was one of the only gazes he'd sought to be in.

He could feel the sunny warmth she radiated spread across his skin, glowing with a familiarity he'd come to find a home in, a refuse he could retreat to whenever he felt her touch. Her hands clasped on both sides of his face, feeling that floating sensation lift him up and losing himself in the moment. God, Lily was something else, this attractive force that could pull him from any level of focus and direct it right to her, pulling him in like a vacuum that he would happily suffocate in. Raleigh would freely lose himself in her grasp and she could be none the wiser to it, not realizing that her boat out at sea attracted the light to dive out into those turbulent waters to rescue it all the same.

Yet, he only wished he ever had the guts to tell her to her face. With all of the fluffy words he could remember to describe how he felt about her, yet they remained locked in him.

The kiss was broken off by the sound of another student, Raleigh offering a genuinely apologetic (and maybe slightly embarrased) whisper in her direction. Sorry, was all he got out before he felt Lily give him another kiss before leaving it alone for now, the girl a few tables over likely incredibly annoyed with them. Don't tell me you didn't have anything to do with that, he grinned in a low voice, still leaned close to her until she pulled back, though his gaze lingered with hers before trying to move back to the book in front of him. Everything felt jumbled now, though, his focus lost with the remnants of the warmth he felt over his face.

With the pen he'd had in his other hand, he dropped it defeatedly in the center of the spine, flipping the book closed with the pen saving his place. We need to go back to the dorm, he confessed. We can't do this here. He eyed her with a knowing gaze, barely trying to hide the defeated grin he wore.

She liked him for his sincerity—liked him for many things, it seemed—worn upon his sleeve in a way that was transparent and unprejudiced. The fact that he had sense enough to feel embarrassed made for a small sign of it. Her face warmed with an amused simper; admittedly she derived some pleasure from his bashfulness. It was a quality she sorely lacked in, though she felt she had little need for it. Inhibition was not meant for people who drew the short end of the stick in life, it was much the reason why she so doggedly pursued the relationships that she did, as friends, lovers, and more. One such example of it sat before her, his accusatory but playful insinuation an inevitable truth to her coquettish tendencies. Not that she had ever the intention of validating his claims.

Feigning an innocent shrug, Lily painted along her lips an unassuming smile, "I have no idea what you're talking about." She hummed softly, though her fingers deceptively traced the length of his forearm, its metronomic sway deliberate in the ways that she was like to be. "As a hardworking, diligent nursing student, there is nothing more important to me than studying for these exams. Hence why I agreed to come to the library." It seemed an unnecessary detail to add that she had, in fact, been thoroughly against the notion of studying beneath prying eyes. She only agreed under two circumstances, both of which were pointedly kept privy to her thoughts. The first and least important of them was that they did need to study, the finals were nothing short of impossible and often made for the reasons most students gave up the field of medicine. That though was but an excuse for a now proven fact that it was more exciting to incite trouble under inappropriate circumstances.

A brow rose high when Raleigh all but gave up mere seconds after turning his attention to his books. She was equal parts flattered as she was feeling ever the more mischievous; cruel might have been a more accurate descriptor. "Do what, Leigh? We're just studying, I can't imagine a better place to do that than in the library." That her fingers never quiet ceased in their ministrations proved a hard contrast to her gallant assertions. But then, she did always enjoy plucking at gossamer threads, invisible boundaries that strained against the girl's invasive curiosity. Under certain contexts, it made her seem insensitive to other peoples comfort zones, particularly the ways that she willfully barraged her way through with her own set ideologies and desires. She was an acquired taste, she'd been told. To be friends with her took a deluge of patience not everyone had, more unfortunate still that if and when she wanted something, she didn't care much for the fit.

Her gaze fixated on Leigh again, if ever it'd actually left at one point or another. "Need help focusing? I can test you." In more ways than one, she thought suggestively.

There were times that being friends with Lily meant wading through the parts of her that weeded out those that couldn't handle her personality. For Raleigh, it was nothing he ever felt he couldn't get past. He was a patient man in the end, something he was often praised for, and almost never felt truly at his end when dealing with things like Lily's teasing, which was often inappropriate at certain times but all in good fun as he knew it. She never did anything to the detriment of anyone, not with full intention, anyway. Whether she failed to notice that she did at all was another issue, but something Raleigh freely pointed out in order to remind her of these things. It was to help, never to hinder, knowing she liked her fun just as much as anyone else.

So as she prodded him in the library, tracing along his arm in her typical mischievous way, Raleigh couldn't help but play along with her machinations. His eyes gave her a playful squint, a subtle grin still on his lips. Uh huh, he mused back at her under his breath. Agreed. Okay. We'll go with that. She played so coy but it was easy to see through everything, knowing how she was. He was honestly surprised she didn't do this more in class, sitting next to him during lectures just to mess with him, knowing how much of it he took without complaint. Not even he could deny the attention he got, returning it in kind to her in the end.

Not anymore we're not, he laughed, gathering the books they had laid out and shoving them down into his bag. Luckily, there weren't many books, but he was still intent on them removing themselves from the library, packing up Lily's books into his bag where they fit. She challenged his focus, offering a test with a tone that screamed something as far from academic as possible, to which he returned with a wide grin. Yeah, I got something I can focus on. Throwing the backpack over his shoulder, he walked over to her chair and looped his arms under her knees and around her back, lifting her up with a quiet grunt and holding her tight to his chest.

We're going back to the dorm, he chuckled into her ear. You can 'test' me there.
