He couldn't help but keep the wry grin he had, looking at her with a hint of competition in his eyes. Lily wasn't the only one who liked a good challenge and Raleigh was making that very clear in his posture. Too bad he couldn't get the right Lily to love him, he smirked as he sat down on the bed across from her, his hands set on his knees in an engaged manner.

When she corrected him on the answer — which had been wrong, in the end — he couldn't hide the way his tongue pressed into his cheek, grinning despite knowing that of course he would miss the first one. He relented as she edged the front of the flannel away from his chest, shimmying his way out of the sleeves and tossing it to the side without looking at where it went. His eyes were trained on Lily now and he wasn't about to let her win. His hands went back to they were on his knees, but not without feeling their way past where Lily had put her legs up.

Bet, he challenged, taking the paper from her as she answered and biting his lip when he checked it with the book. Well, that put him at a severe disadvantage, didn't it? He stood up, thinking for a moment before kicking off each shoe, making an effort to physically show them as separate. That counts as two, right? A small little cheat, but technically he wasn't wrong. Hopefully Lily wouldn't see it as too much of a slip past the rules, given how much shit she had put him through today. Maybe he felt like he earned this mulligan, in a sense, but it didn't matter as much to him as getting to that endgame he saw so creeping closer and closer.

C, he answered back, more sure of his answer this time around but still feeling apprehension because of the way the last question went. His hand pulled the paper from her, writing the next question down with slight hesitation, almost hoping she got it wrong in an effort to feel a little bit more even. What was the fun of a complete stomp anyway?

How are the following compounds related?

a. isoelectronic species

b. isotopes

c. isomers

d. These compounds are not related at all...they are totally different.

She basked in his retaliation, taking pleasure in a challenge met than forgone. It was especially rewarding when it came from Leigh who, in spite of it all, was as competitive as she was, unwilling to relent for any given reason. It was a refreshing change of pace, one which she required for on a regular basis. "Who says I'm not the right Lily?" The girl shot back with a sprightly cant of her head. Save for the moments they had to answer the questions, they never broke eye contact in a battle of wills that well crossed the lines of intimacy, charging the space between them with tension that coiled and recoiled as a bundle of nerves.

When his hands grazed the skin of her calves, a heated shudder jettisoned upward and pooled as desire in her eyes. If she wanted, she could have hidden her reactions but no, she yearned for him to see that he affected her. So she did, lips parting in a small, contented 'o' before tugging downward in a pretty pout. "That's cheating and you know it." Despite her reproach, she allowed him his pass. Vengeance could be had in many different ways and the opportunity presented itself when Leigh answered correctly soon after. "Well, looks like you got it right. Here's your prize." Where he played his hand conservatively, she sought retribution in polarity as her legs parted, feet sliding down to encompass the sides of his thighs. Her black, knee-length skirt bunched upward, sliding to reveal slips of moon-kissed flesh as her fingers gripped the fabric of the skirt and lifted higher until a matching set of black, lace peeked from between the juncture of her thighs. She looked to him then, brimmed with a gusto that had her hooking her thumbs into the waistband of her panties and pulling the fabric down with deliberate languor. It was only when her arms reached full length, mid-way against her thighs did she stop and lean back. "Help me? I can't reach so far without getting up." As if the request alone were not enough, she lifted her feet once more to deposit them against the tops of his thighs, closer and higher up than before.

"I need time to answer your question anyway," she purred, making a deliberate show of turning her attention to his question. Competitive or not, even her ability to focus was highly questionable when under duress of this caliber. Nonetheless, she tried her best, scribbling notes with her panties half-down and her skirt bunched messily against her legs and hips. "B, my answer is B." Lily decided, circling the answer before quickly writing another question of her own to replace his. "Your turn."

Her response was quick but it didn't unsettle him. Raleigh felt a little less tense and a little more confident despite having lost two questions. Not the right Lily for him, he clarified, shrugging his shoulders with a soft smile. The right one for someone else, maybe. It was the smallest of hints, something that implied a little more but it was as verbally explicit as he got. His eyes were locked on her and her alone, hardly moving sometimes even to answer the questions. It wasn't a hard stare, but the kind where he knew how this would end regardless of how their little game went. In the end, they both won despite whoever got the most right.

He grinned at his temporary victory, jesting all the while knowing he was getting away with a technicality, but he probably should have expected the turnaround Lily gave him in return for getting his answer right. His smile dropped into an expression of mild surprise, raising his brows for a moment as he had, somehow, forgot who he had been challenging. Lily took her competitions seriously and her vengeance certainly was sweet. His eyes traced from her face down her body, towards her legs where she stopped and back up to her face once more, biting the inside of his lip lightly. Sure, he chuckled softly, not moving his gaze away any more as he slowly slipped the fabric the rest of the way down. His fingers deliberately dragged along her skin with a subtle touch, with ample time for her to answer the question as well as notice the effort he put into his own teasing. Once it had slipped all the way off, he tossed it to the side with his flannel.

Reaching forward, he grabbed the sides of the chair she'd perched on, pulling it swiftly towards him in a way that both of them had a leg in between the other's in a way that left very little room between them. So you don't have to lean over so far, he explained, the wry smile making a reappearance once more. He could already feel his gut start to twist and writhe, his skin tingling and his hands itching to reveal more skin hidden under fabric. Hers or his own, it hardly mattered to him at this point. His head shook at her answer mouthing the real one with no sound to accompany it and a silent gesture that urged another article of clothing to be taken off.

His focus started to waver more and more, breathing heavily through his nose while deep in jumbled thoughts. The both of them had to be too thoroughly distracted to even hope of getting the rest of the questions right. As much as they studied, there was a goal that was much much closer than the exam and all they had to do was reach out to grab it. So, Raleigh did just that. He wrote down his question soon after, giving his answer after handing the paper back to her with a willful stare.

B. He knew the answer was wrong — but that was his intention. Bet.

The half-life of francium-212 is 19 minutes. How many minutes will it take for 1 gram of this isotope to decay to 0.125 grams?

a. 4.75 minutes

b. 9.5 minutes

c. 38 minutes

d. 57 minutes

The effect of his words was immediate as her gaze softened in the throes of his insinuation. He took her off-guard; attacked when her walls were felled and left her feeling more flustered than confident. She smiled then, though her gaze dropped. "Maybe," came her reply, brimmed with an uncharacteristic uncertainty. In truth, Lily was a fearful thing. Easy to scare and hard to trust, emotional vulnerability was her utmost desire and yet that which she was least like to give. Again and again, she caught her lower lip between her teeth, whiling away at it until her attention was forcibly shifted to the familiar touch of warmth along her legs. For a moment, she took consolation in his gentle ministrations before squealing in delight when jerked closer, legs intertwined and touching.

"How sweet of you," she purred. "Since I got my question wrong, I suppose something has to come off. Care to help again?" Suddenly, she pulled her legs up, shifting so that they were once more encompassing his thighs. Then, she scooted forward so that she was seated closer toward his knees. A small hum broke past her lips in feigned interest, eyes averted toward the question he posed her. "Sorry, B's wrong. On top of the fact, I'm willing to double up on my bet that the answer for your question is D. For obvious reasons. Wanna take me up on it?" A part of her suspected he deliberately threw his chance at answering correctly but she found that she didn't mind so much. It meant all the more for her to take as she contemplated how she intended to reap her rewards. His wrong answer on top of what she was sure was her right one, two if he took her up on the bet.

Just as she finished scrawling her next question, Lily heaved herself up and on her knees, consuming the distance between them with predatory ease. When she sat, they were hip to hip, hands to cheek as she dragged his face forward into a heated kiss. "Hope you don't mind if I help with your punishment," she breathed raggedly against swollen lips before capturing them again. Her fingers then threaded through his hair, puling with some amount of roughness on the auburn strands before smoothing down the back of his head and shoulders. Her hips ground down, body moving of its own accord when a shuddering gasp filled the space between them. It was impossible to remember her initial goal, at least not until her hands found purchase along his chest and ghosted further down to the edges of his t-shirt. "In case you decide to cheat again, I'll be taking this as my prize." She pulled upward, silently demanding that he remove his shirt. "Mmm, much better. So, am I right?"

The change in inflection in her face caught his eye right away as he watched her, carefully studying her reaction and hoping that he didn't say too much with what little he gave. Vulnerability was a feeling Raleigh was quite used to, though he didn't always recommend it at times. He struggled with not wearing his heart on his sleeve so much, being so open and honest with a lot of things save for a few. Yet that was one of things he sought to be: honest and candid — though in his case, it was often to a fault. It was known to be a fault of his, but he wanted to consider it a good fault — the kind that marked a good person trying to do right rather than someone with ulterior intentions.

He didn't care that she was asking him to help — in fact, it made it all the more satisfying to peel off bits of clothing here and there in painfully slow increments, teasing the both of them. Don't mind if I do, he smirked as his hands ran over her hips, creeping up under the top as they pushed the fabric up and urged her to lift her arms to make the process easier. Once he had peeled that piece off, his hands floated back down to her waist, running over the exposed skin with a worn touch.

His grin grew wider as she confirmed his wrong answer, doubling up on the bet for the next correct answer. Of course, he murmured as he felt her scoot into his lap, eagerly pushing into her touch as his cheeks were grasped and he was beckoned forward to meet her in the middle. I wouldn't have it any other way, he breathed against her lips. The twisting in his gut coiled stronger as he felt a fire in his chest start to burn, kindled by her fingers running through and tugging on his hair. His own fingers had been trailing across the skin on her back, dragging the tips in a long line along each side of her spine, tightening when her hips rubbed against his. A breathy moan escaped him, knowing she could likely both hear and feel how her advances affected him as she sat atop his legs, pulling him further down into that deep rabbit hole that promised less lessons of the academic kind and more of the carnal kind.

As soon as she suggested it did he oblige, raising his hands away from her and over his head as he pulled the shirt over it, flicking that into the slowly growing pile off to the side. His smile faded into something along the lines of focused intent, feeling entranced by the competitive spirit and the woman in front of him. It wasn't intentional, but he often tunneled into focus, finding his drive taking him in directions he never really expected. One of those was towards Lily, who he probably would have never imagined himself being friends with a few years ago. He could hardly remember what it was like without her constant teasing and prodding encouragement.

But he remembered that he had yet another piece to take off, having agreed to the bet. His hands fell down to his belt, slowly unbuckling it while a slight smirk formed against her lips. I might need a little more help. He delayed looking at the next question and answering it, partially because he wanted to drag them away from the depths of organic chemistry and academics they had been buried in all day — but also because he couldn't lose if they never finished their friendly competition. Distractions were a hell of a thing.

More times than she cared for, Lily wondered what they were and if maybe, just maybe, they could be more. When they were together, she enjoyed every moment of it from their quiet, even breaths when studying to the rise and swell of their chests when they laughed and giggled. Surely there was something to be said of their lack of quarrels—repressed were minor dissatisfactions—but then, how could anything be had of what they were now? From where they stood, they hung in a space of hormonal youth, drifting in a limbo where ambiguity made for the mainstay of their day and age. Lily wanted more, but it was oft in times like this where she tended to cower. Her skins of bombast were all for show, so much so that when push came to shove, it was she who initiated any form of diversion.

Her breath quickened at his touch, whorls of heat that plumed where the skin of his fingers and palms met her hip and waist. She was compliant to her losses, eager to rid them both of the gossamer material that clung to their bodies. "Thank you," she purred with measured relief and infinitesimal coyness. Soon their words were silenced with locked lips, his pleasure measured by muted moans and hers in arched backs. Their original, just goal was too easily felled by Bacchus' call to arms, triumphant even to Cupid.

When his own shirt peeled away per her riotous demands, Lily nearly mewled with contentment. She drew impossibly closer still, leaving no margin for anything but that of her moon-kissed flesh pressed to his sun-soaked chest. She felt safe. Safe in his arms. Safe in his embrace. She was as a storm-struck sea, a riptide of emotions that crested and fell with each kiss and touch. He, her sole companion, though thrashed by the tempest was unwavering in spite of it all. It was impossible to ignore or resist him, so instead she took him wholly and greedily; consumed him with her lips, her touch, her gaze, and her heart. If words could be bestowed her fleeting touch it would have whispered, stay. Please stay.

His words parsed the space between them, threatening their lack of distance with inevitability. Lily caught her lower lip between her teeth and experimentally ground against him one last time before affording him the space they both needed. "And this is the reason why I think exhibitionists have the right idea in mind," she murmured as she swat his hand away to help him with his buckle. "But that'd be taking away half the fun, wouldn't it?" At that, she ran her fingers deftly over the button and zipper of his jeans, applying a near phantasmal pressure to contrast her earlier, more daring grinding. Yet it was a touch that came as quickly as it left, departed without warning as the girl stood up and removed herself entirely from Raleigh's reach. Her thumbs hooked against the inflexible waistband of her black skirt, hips swaying to music only she could hear until her fingers found purchase on the zipper. She tugged down and with it, the leather fabric slid down the length of her legs, pooling on the floor that was naught more than a mosaic of clothes. Then, Lily turned her back to him, stark naked save for her bra. "Help?" She beckoned, hands moving to collect her hair and pull it over one shoulder so that he might have better access.

Neither of them knew it, but they were both afraid of what they could have been, of what they could ever be. From an early age, Raleigh had been taught that love didn't always come from those close to you and those close to you often accompanied their love with pain. Emotional or physical, it didn't matter, but he had grown numb to it by this point. His father, his mother, his brothers — they all had loved and hurt him at the same time and it just became a fact of life that loving someone was a painful process to endure. He didn't want it to be, though. He wanted that gentle intimacy that was romanticized in media and felt like he deserved at times, even if he was convinced that sometimes, he was at fault for the bad around him.

It had originally been Tes who taught him that love didn't always come with hurt and heartbreak. She came into his life at an earlier age, but he was all the better man for it. Lily was the second, though she was a different animal altogether for Raleigh. She challenged him to be better instead of shaping him, daring for him to follow her to the brink and back with her flights of fancy.

And of course, he had never been attracted to Tes the way he was to Lily. Tes was a sister at best, despite being a close one. Lily was... something different. Something more.

So when she pulled at his skin with her fingers, running skin on skin with electrical friction, he could have sworn it was her gravity pulling him downwards and not her herself. The effect she had on him had to be supernatural because he couldn't ever believe he'd willingly drown himself in someone's presence. Yet, he found himself breathing in everything just to make himself fall faster, keeping in pace with her fervor as he'd done before. They did fit neatly against each other, she had that right and he could feel it too.

He only felt that return to the surface to breathe when she broke away from him, motioning as if she was going to assist him, but instead removing another article of clothing and asking for help with the very last one as she turned away from him. Lifting himself up, he closed the distance again as he pressed his lips to her ear opposite of where she pulled her hair. You're such a tease, he grinned, finding the clasp with a free hand and unhooking it so it could join the pile on the ground, letting his other hand roam over her exposed skin with a feather light touch. Slowly, his fingers traversed over curves before they gripped with a controlled confidence, spinning her around and lifting her up so her eyes were level with his, spinning his own body so that he could lay her down on the bed and keeping himself lifted above her.

Instead of catching up to her in shedding more clothing, he turned his attention wholly to her, catching her lips once more with his own in a gentle way — pulling back on the reins of the part of him that was ever hungry for a carnality in the most carnivorous of ways, that fervent instinct to lose himself in her and the distraction she provided. He sought an escape from the guilt he felt at times, the negative feelings that haunted him at night when she wasn't present at his side. The ones he failed to mention to her. She was more to him just as she was also more than he would ever be — and that was why he kept these things from her. So he continued his silence with touches and breaths on her skin, trailing from her lips to her chest to her stomach and further beyond, with the faint hope that they could just exist as they were and everything would still work out the end.

They were a union of land and sea as white, crescent waves ebbing and flowing against cliffs and shores. A blissful smile graced her lips, reactionary to the warmth of his breath against her ear, and her eyes closed to savor his proximity and all that he had to give. He had seen her for all the she was in storm and in quietude. From his high reach, he had but glimpsed how deep her wounds ran; how much she hid beneath roaring waves, yet it was enough. It was enough that he'd known her on better days and accepted her for that which lurked within. Although they never shared more than was needed, they were there when it mattered. His arms were always open to her touch and kisses, welcoming her when she crept along his weather-worn shores and stole away with a piece of him in small, inconsequential measures. She was greedy, wanting to fill her emptiness so that the light could shine upon her in full and somehow, he always managed to give just what she needed whenever she asked. There were never enough ways for her to say thank you so she kept coming back, over and over and over.

A distant hum escaped her lips, drawn forth by his confident guiding hand. She was compliant to his whims, spun and lifted in the air so that her legs could wrap around his waist. She never did tire of the way heat would burst against her skin when they embraced, and sometimes it was too much for the girl who always ran a little colder than was normal. Overwhelmed in the best of ways, Lily clung to him as he gently laid her down and pressed upon her constellations of kisses to her face, chest, and stomach. From behind closed eyes, she imagined the patterns of his adoration, following them one by one to create shapes that never quite made sense but then, it was almost always special. Her back arched as he drew closer to her core, anticipation flooding her nerves until she reached down and framed his face with the palms of her hands. She tugged upward once, urging him to return to her side.

When he did rise, she pressed fond kisses along his lips as her hands fluttered down to pick up where they left off. Working through the buckle, button, and zipper, Lily worked his pants and boxers down along his hips, sliding them as far as they would go mid-thigh before her reach fell short. She pulled away then, a pout forming along her lips. Impatience had her uncoiling her legs so to use her feet to push the rest of the fabric along the way. With help, the two of them wore nothing but their skin. The girl shifted from beneath him, urging Leigh to flip over so she could straddle him with her legs tucked against each side of his hips and her hands threaded through his hair. She kissed him again and again, light and fleeting. "Raleigh Pace," she whispered. "I am the luckiest girl I know and I have you to thank for it." The statement, a shallow one at best, was loaded where Lily was concerned. It'd taken an incredible amount of courage to utter even this and yet, she meant every word of it, from the way his name rolled off her tongue to the pink that dusted her cheeks. She was the happiest she'd been in a long time, teeming at the seams with hard-won normalcy and — dare she say — love. Yes, she thought. She loved him.

There was a lot Raleigh gave her, whatever he thought would make her happier — cheered her up when she needed it or encouraged her to pursue something she desired, that was what he was there for. He was the support, the pedestal to bear the weight of others as he held them up — but he liked it that way sometimes. The willingness to give others the spotlight and remain behind the scenes was far and few between in the medical field, where many liked to be the person who got credit for a diagnosis or quick thinking that saved a life.

But Raleigh had never been that kind of person. Even now, he felt her beckon him upwards where he gladly met her lips again, letting her help strip him bare for both of them to see, both physically and emotionally. He often let her have that control, something some people felt more comfortable having, but he didn't think he needed it. Not with her, at least. There was a large amount of trusthe put in her, as she did with him, and so he flipped over to let her legs straddle him and her fingers curl through his hair. His chest swelled when she spoke his name, uttering words of sincerity that elicited the softest smile on his face, specifically the kind he gave her all too often when she spoke to him with his full name as if she needed the whole thing to be said aloud for it to be official. It was actually kind of adorable.

Returning her kisses in kind, he kept in close proximity to her face, feeling the heat radiate between the both of them. You might be the luckiest girl you know, he murmured, looking right into her eyes with a gentle sincerity. But you're the best thing that's happened to me since I came here. A hand had crept up to her face, cradling her cheek as his thumb ran softly over her skin. So I guess we both have something to thank each other for. A bigger grin crept along Raleigh's face as he pressed forward in a soft but intimate kiss, feeling a content warmth spread in his chest. Maybe eventually they would get back to actually studying for their test, but for now, the temporary reprieve they had was theraputic for their frazzled brains. Comfort in each other did that for them, rejuvenating the both of them through harrowing courses and dreaded geometry, as well as solidifying the growing bond they'd formed since their first day of class together.

All Raleigh hoped for was that it could be cemeted in place, weathering even the most furious of storms ahead. That was all he could have ever wanted from her — from them.
