He was terrified. Read thought things had been bad after what had happened with Kiku, but they had gotten so much worse, and he hadn’t a clue how he was supposed to deal with it all. It was bizarre to him how quickly things had changed. A few weeks ago he’d been living with his parents still. Or had it been a month ago now? He didn’t even remember, and it upset him that with all that had gone on he was losing track of time that easily.

He didn’t trust anyone anymore. How could he when it now seemed like some, if not all of them were hiding things, hurting people. However, with his options so limited, and his fear of the streets, and demons stronger than his impulse to avoid everyone, Read caved and found himself headed toward one of the first people he’d met in The City. Who was to say that Evan wasn’t a demon as well, but cold, alone, and desperate he wandered in search of the man’s home.

It was a surprise to him that he’d even managed to find it at all, but when he’d left Read had tried to remember landmarks around the area in case he needed to find him again. Of course, his leaving had been another reason that had Read frozen in front of the man’s door once he’d arrived. What if he didn’t want him around? He’d been nice to him once, but that didn’t mean he wanted the burden of his presence again, or all of a sudden. He stared at the door knob, anxious as if it would open any second, but too afraid to make the first move.

Maybe he wasn’t even home. Read thought, that if he was lucky the guy wouldn’t even be around. He bit his lower lip, lifted his eyes to the door, then reached out to knock reluctantly. It was a pathetic knock, and he was all too quick to pull his hand away after he had. He shouldn’t be here. After he’d left without warning, surely Evan wasn’t going to be pleased to see him showing up like he owned the damn place. He ran a hand through his hair, scowled, and turned on his heel to give up and walk away. He couldn’t do this...

Read had come back. For one night only, as he'd said. Evan had make sure the guy had everything he would need. Some toothpaste and a new toothbrush, some soap and shampoo, a towel... The bed was clean - he made sure to wash those sheets every week, even though nobody had used them in ages. He'd told him to feel at home and grab anything he wanted from the fridge or pantry, or to watch TV however long he wanted.

They'd seen each other the next morning, at breakfast. But then Evan had to leave for work, another assignment. And when night had fallen and he'd returned... the guy was nowhere to be found. It'd been hard to hide his disappointment and Kordran, his demon, had mocked him relentlessly. 'Another stray lost!' It wasn't... Why did he felt such an inclination to help them? Sam and Read?

Part of him said that it was because he'd been in their situation, when he got to the City. And that time, he'd had to forge a path on his own - at least until the White Rabbit recruited him. And that wasn't much of a help - just a better paid job with its own dangers. Evan hoped Sam and Read, wherever they were now, hadn't gotten in with a worse crowd. He'd seen how horrible life could be... and he didn't want that to happen to them.

Evan was sitting at home, pouring over the photos of his last assignment, when he heard a faint knock at the door. His eyebrows furrowed - who could it be? He wasn't expecting anyone. Maybe it was maintenance - a pipe burst or the elevator broke or something. "Coming!" He hollered at the door, making his way over and opening it. Only to see Read turning around, as though he was about to leave.

"Read!" He exclaimed, relief evident in his face and his voice, as he thoughtlessly wrapped an arm around the young man. "I'm so glad you're okay! Come in, come in!" There was definitely no way he was letting Read go this time, so he practically forced him into the apartment then closed the door behind them. "Are you okay? Please tell me nothing bad happened to you."

It appeared, that despite his decision that he wasn't capable of doing this Read was still made unable to move once he heard the sound of the man's voice on the other side of the door. He was home, and even just hearing the sound of Evan's voice on the other side of that door made him feel so guilty he just couldn't move. Why did he come back here? Read didn't want Evan involved in the mess that he would be bringing with him, but it was too late to make hasty decisions. His heart dropped when the door opened.

He only turned slightly before he was suddenly pulled into the arms of the blonde. It was so strange seeing Evan again when he'd convinced himself that he wouldn't once he left, but here he was, and here Evan was sounding happy to see him, even concerned. “Uh..yea.” Read didn't know what to say, but stiffly returned the hug before he was nudged inside just as quickly as Evan had been able to greet him.

Read scanned the room, half expecting someone else to be visiting with Evan. Of course that wasn't the case though. Surely Evan wouldn't have welcomed him in if he had company. Read looked a little worse for wear than the last time he'd seen him, but at least now he had clothes that helped him stand out less. He had a bag slung over his shoulder with the very few things he'd kept on him since he'd departed from Evans, his nicer clothes, basic toiletries and the like. Read shrugged his shoulders, suddenly paranoid that Evan might notice the slow healing bruises on his neck, given to him by the thug that almost killed him before Read had aided in ending his life. Fun times. However, those were times he didn't want to talk to Evan about or he might just have another mental break down. He'd already done that once to the guy, he didn't deserve another.

At any rate, Read noticed the papers and photos, miscellaneous things scattered about. He could deduce they were a part of his work, and anxiously looked away from them and back over at Evan so that he didn't seem nosy. “I'm fine. Fine.” If he repeated it enough it made it one hundred percent true all around, but he couldn't deny the fact that he was at least alive so that was something. “I didn't..mean to suddenly show up out of no where.” Read brought his hand to the strap of his bag and adjusted it over his shoulder. He hoped the collar of his coat was doing its job to cover the bruises on his neck. Thankfully the ones on his face were mostly gone entirely.

“I didn't have anywhere else-..I just thought maybe it was safer here.” Read looked away from him, then over at his papers and such. “If you're busy...I get that your job is secret or whatever. I don't have to be here if it'll cause trouble..”
